In the December 1984 issue of Starlog on Page 21, Director W. D. Richter had the following to say about the footage cut from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai :
"We learned in previews that while I might know everything about the [death of Buckaroo Banzai's parents] scene, the audience found it hard to meet all those characters."
[Later in the interview, Richter explains why all references to Hanoi Xan were cut.]
'It doesn't benefit the film to refer to two villains [Lizardo and Hanoi Xan] and only ask the audience to learn about one of them.'
[Richter also mentions in this interview that the "single, most missed moment in the movie" has to do with Bigboote refusing a hit from the dry battery cell that the other two Lectroids are sucking on. It seems that Sherwood Productions was concerned that the Lectroids weren't being portrayed ominous enough and the brief scene was cut.]
